Preserving the Living Memory of European Music

Each generation of musicians rediscovers, experiments with, and reinvents how music can be performed. In the field of historically informed performance, this work relies on a constant dialogue between research, historical sources, and artistic creation.

Through rehearsals and concerts, orchestras generate an exceptional body of knowledge: practical transcriptions and new editions, annotated scores, performative choices, reconstruction and adaptation of instruments, tuning and temperament settings, working methods, and musicological reflections.

Yet, this precious memory remains fragile. It is scattered among musicians' personal archives, orchestral libraries, and other hard-to-access documents. With each generation, a portion of this knowledge risks disappearing.

LaDocumenta.eu was created to address this challenge.

Supported by a consortium of leading European orchestras, the platform is the first to create a digital infrastructure dedicated to preserving the memory of musical performance. It enables the collection, structuring, and dissemination of knowledge derived from artistic practice, making it accessible to musicians, researchers, and audiences worldwide.

By supporting LaDocumenta.eu, you contribute to preserving a unique artistic heritage: not only the works of European music, but also the living memory of those who bring them to life.
