An Angel Praying in the Garden of Olives
Théodore Chassériau - Artvee
The preface to our edition of Lotti’s Kyrie-Gloria Mass (the first complete modern edition!) provides general information on the life and work of Antonio Lotti, and specifically discusses the sources for the Mass movements that were probably composed for San Marco in Venice and have survived in Dresden.
It is not clear whether the two individual movements (Kyrie & Gloria) were intended as a coherent work. The current concept of a work did not yet exist in the 18th century. At that time, it was quite common practice to have Mass movements by different composers within a service.
The title « Missa a tre cori » was suggested by the editors of the Mass in the Balthasar-Neumann Edition.
