For the Balthasar Neumann Ensemble’s production of Parsifal under the direction of Thomas Hengelbrock, we did research on Wagner’s ideas about performance practice, especially on questions of tempi.
For this purpose, original quotations from Wagner and his circle were viewed and compiled. There are original rehearsal instructions by Wagner as well as passages from his writings, but also statements by contemporaries and companions such as the conductor Felix Weingartner.
From this it becomes particularly clear that Wagner always preferred flowing, by no means too slow and pathetic tempi.
